Defendants in criminal cases should always retain an attorney for these three reasons:
- In most cases, defendants can stay home from court as long as their lawyer appears in their place;
- Attorneys are much more skilled than non-attorneys at defending against criminal charges and negotiating with the D.A.; and
- Prosecutors take defendants more seriously if they have an attorney and usually offer better deals.
