More than 20 years after 20-year-old Nadia Iverson was raped and murdered, 51-year-old former Las Vegas cop Arthur Lee Sewall Jr. was arrested for it. DNA evidence allegedly links him to the crime. Yesterday, a Las Vegas judge ordered that he be held without bail.
Sewall is being charged with murder with a deadly weapon and two counts of sexual assault with a deadly weapon. The victim was found on May 8, 1997, in an apartment near Washington Ave. and Martin Luther King Blvd. She had been shot in the head.
"It is suspicious that it took more than two decades for authorities to arrest someone in this case," said Las Vegas criminal defense attorney Michael Becker. "DNA evidence existed back in 1997. Now the question turns to the chain-of-custody for and the integrity of this supposed DNA evidence. A lot of misconduct can occur in 20 years."
