We all owe a debt of profound gratitude to our nation's veterans and their service. However, if someone in Henderson, Nevada dishonors that service by makings misrepresentations about their military honors in order to obtain money or other benefits, they are committing a federal crime and can go to jail.

The federal Stolen Valor Act of 2013 amended the federal criminal code and made it a federal offense for a person - veteran or otherwise - to fraudulently claim that they received certain specified military decorations and awards with the intention of obtaining money, property, or other tangible benefits based on convincing someone that he or she did in fact receive that award.

Specifically, misrepresenting your receipt of any of the following military honors can result in federal criminal charges:

  • a Congressional Medal of Honor
  • a distinguished-service cross
  • a Navy cross
  • an Air Force cross
  • a silver star
  • a Purple Heart
  • a Combat Infantryman's Badge
  • a Combat Action Badge
  • a Combat Medical Badge
  • a Combat Action Ribbon
  • a Combat Action Medal, or
  • any replacement or duplicate medal for such medal as authorized by law.

Upon conviction for a violation of the Stolen Valor Act, you are subject to hefty fines and up to a year in federal prison.
