1. Search for a Sacramento Inmate

The Sacramento Sheriff's Department provides an online search engine that will allow you to determine if your loved one is currently in custody at the Rio Consumnes Detention Center. By inputting the first and last name, you will call up a list of potential candidates. Each is identified by birthdate, as well as height/weight. Family and friends are not permitted to call into the Rio Consumnes Correctional Center to speak directly to a detainee or inmate. Another contact option at the Rio Consumnes Detention Center is email. Email messages can be sent to inmates, but any replies will be received through postal mail. Messages are limited to one per day, a single page print-out, with no attachments allowed. To send email, locate your loved one on the Sheriff's inmate search site and click “email this inmate.”

Note that all email messages will be read, and phone calls are also subject to monitoring and recording. To avoid negatively impacting a pending criminal case, you must avoid making incriminating statements pertaining to criminal charges.

Rio Consumnes Detention Facility inmates can order food and comfort items from commissary, and friends and families can contribute to their spending account. The inmate's X-reference number will be needed (available through inmate search) and the location number: 257501.

You can also use the TouchPay kiosk in the jail lobby to fund an inmate cash account. Deposits must be recorded by 7:00 a.m. Sunday to be usable for the next week's order. Fees are charged for all funding services.

5. Visitation at the Jail

Pretrial inmates can receive visits any evening except Friday and may have two visits per week. Registration for these visits are between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m., with visitation following. There is a maximum of three visitors per session, including children.

The following rules apply to all visitors:

  • The dress code prohibits revealing clothing (sheer, too short, or tops revealing the midriff, chest, back, or shoulders) and clothes promoting violence, drugs, gangs or sex acts.
  • Leave all personal items behind other than a car key or remote, ID and money. For a baby, you can bring a plastic bag with one bottle, one diaper, one blanket and baby wipes.
  • Visitors over 18 must have government-issued photo ID.
  • Visitors under 18 must be in the company of a parent or legal guardian. If you are a spouse of an inmate, you must present a certified marriage document.
  • You may not visit if you have been a Sacramento inmate within the last 30 days or have been convicted of a felony resulting in prison confinement. Exceptions must have consent of the jail commander or watch supervisor.

6. Mail Policies

You can send an unlimited amount of mail to RCCC inmates, with numerous restrictions as to form and content. Include your full name and address on the envelope, which should be addressed as follows:

There is a long list of prohibited items that may not be mailed to Rio Consumnes Detention Center inmates. Packages are not allowed. Envelopes should be plain and unembellished with any type of foreign material. Similarly, greeting cards should be simple and unadorned with glitter, music, etc.

You can send (non-polaroid) photographs 4” x 6” or smaller. Subject matter must be free of pornographic or gang-related material. Note: Inmates may not keep more than 10 photos at a time.

You are also permitted to order (appropriate) softcover books, magazines or newspapers for direct delivery from a publisher or online vendor (such as Amazon or Banes and Noble). Five books are the maximum allowed for inmate possession.

Do not send stamps or other correspondence materials. These are available for purchase through commissary.

7. Life at the Jail

The pledged mission of Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center is to provide a safe, secure and healthy confinement environment . The supervisory staff numbers over 180, in addition to ancillary services providers. The jail follows protocols of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). More information pertaining to PREA, including assault and harassment incident reports, is provided on the Sacramento sheriff's website.

Health services, including dental and medical care, is provided for inmates through the Correctional Health Services system. Or, call (916) 875-9782 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Follow up is promised within 24 hours.

A “Jail Industries Program” provides skills training for Rio Cosumnes Detention Center inmates, who can work to produce products for the benefit of non-profit and governmental agencies. The Sheriff's Department also implements a post-detention reentry program to help rehabilitate offenders.

8. Inmate property

Items necessary to an inmate's health can be brought into the Rio Consumnes facility, and will be accepted on a case by case basis. For inmate property brought into the jail and confiscated/stored, a signed property release form will provide authorization for pick-up. When submitted in advance by an inmate, friends or family members can pick up property between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. daily. Individual items will not be released --stored property must be removed in its entirety during pick-up.

Money can also be released with a signed release form. When approved, money can be picked up at Gatehouse 7 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily.
