The Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall (otherwise known as Sylmar Juvenile Hall) was named in honor of one of Los Angeles County's Chief Probation Officers. Established back in the late 70's, Sylmar Juvenile Hall underwent major development in the late 90's that resulted in its current capacity to house approximately 700 juvenile detainees.

Like Eastlake Juvenile Hall and Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, the Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall in Sylmar CA serves as a temporary holding facility for juvenile detainees during their court proceedings. Ultimately, the minors will be released home to their parents, placed in foster care, sent to a Los Angeles County juvenile camp facility or sentenced to the California Youth Authority.

Intake procedure at the Barry J. Nidorf Sylmar Juvenile Hall

After minors get admitted at the Barry J. Nidorf Sylmar Juvenile Hall, the facility provides them a sufficient supply of items for their personal care while they are detained. These items are for their personal use only and are not recycled for use by other minors. Sharing of these items is also not practiced by the minors.

When a minor is transferred or released from the facility, they will dress in their personal clothing and all personal belongings will be returned upon their discharge.

How to contact a child at the Barry J. Nidorf Sylmar Juvenile Hall

Minors detained at the Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall in Sylmar do not receive incoming calls from anyone. However, minors are able to make outgoing collect calls to their parents and/or legal guardian to notify them of their location and status. Calls may be monitored for security reasons unless your child is speaking with their lawyer.

Visiting procedures and visiting hours at the Barry Nidorf Juvenile Hall

General visiting hours at the Sylmar Juvenile Hall are from 1:00 pm till 4:00 pm on Sundays only. Otherwise, minors may accept visits from parents and/or legal guardians on days after their court hearing between the hours of 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm to discuss status of their case. Special visits from other relatives require a court order or approval by the Supervising Probation Officer. Visitors must bring Government issued photo identification to conduct their visit.

All visitors are subject to inspection of their persons and their belongings as part of the safety and security measures at the Barry J. Nidorf "Sylmar" Juvenile Hall. Everyone entering the facility with the intent to visit a minor is expected to be dressed in proper attire. Revealing and/or provocative clothing in nature, images of gang-related activities or with sexual undertones are all considered to be inappropriate attire.

Food and drinks are not allowed to be brought or consumed while visiting at the Sylmar Juvenile Hall. Alcohol and drugs are prohibited along with illegal weapons and/or any type of objects that might be used to injure another person. Anyone caught in possession of these items will be denied entry and may get prosecuted. If a visitor appears to be intoxicated or is under the influence of illegal substance, he or she will not be granted visitation privilege and will be subject to prosecution.

Cell phones, cameras, wallets, and/or purses are not allowed in the visiting area. Visitors are not allowed to loiter around the facility unless supervised by a Probation Officer. Upon leaving the visiting area, your visiting privilege is terminated and will not be allowed to come back until the next visiting schedule.

Rules and regulations on mail correspondence at the Sylmar Juvenile Hall

Since phone privileges at the Sylmar Juvenile Hall are limited, corresponding through mail with a minor detained at the facility is the most efficient way of communication. Minors temporarily housed at the hall are provided with supplies that allow them to correspond through mail with their family members. Confidential correspondence with their lawyers are respected, otherwise there is no right to privacy will the majority of the mail correspondence.

All letters must be properly addressed with a return address for proper delivery. Letters must not contain any contraband. No slogans or images that depict acts of violence of gang-related behavior on the outside of the letters. No packages or letters exceeding (5" x 7") in size allowed to be sent to a minor at the Sylmar Juvenile Hall. Subscriptions to any kind of publication are also prohibited.

Minors may receive photographs but they are only allowed to keep a quantity of 5 at any given time. Also, photographs must not contain any type of nudity, must not be sexual in nature, or depict images that involve drugs, violence, or gang-related activities. If a minor is found in possession of any of these type of photographs, they will be confiscated and your child will be put on mail review status and their mail correspondence privilege might be suspended.
