The James A. Musick Jail also known as "The Farm" is located at 13502 Musick Road in the city of Irvine. It houses approximately 1,250 adult inmates, both males and females. This facility sits on a 100 acre unincorporated land bordering the cities of Irvine and Lake Forest.

Majority of the inmates detained at the James Musick Facility were arrested for minor crimes such as California DUI, Orange County petty theft, Failure to pay child support, and Penal Code 647b Prostitution. Inmates accused of serious crimes committed such as rape, robbery or murder do not qualify for transfer to this facility.

How to post bail at the James A. Musick Jail in Santa Ana?

Upon completion of the inmate's booking process at the James A. Musick Facility, bail amount will be set according to the Orange County Bail schedule. Approximately a few hours later, a family member or a friend may now bail out an inmate to guarantee his or her appearance in court.

NOTE: Inmates incarcerated at the James A. Musick Facility, to post bail you will have to go to the Cashier's office at the Intake Release Center (IRC) at the Orange County Central Jail Complex located at 550 N. Flower St., Santa Ana, CA 92702. The Cashier's office is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The list below indicates accepted forms of payment as bail at the James A. Musick Jail:

Cash - If you are posting bail in cash, you need to have full amount of bail. Upon conclusion of the court proceedings, your posted bail will be refunded to you. However, you will be charged a small administrative fee.

Cashier's check - If paying with a cashier's check, please make the check payable to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. This method of payment will be accepted only once the issuing financial institution has properly verified its authenticity. It is very important to bring a business card with the bank employee's name and number for verification purposes.

Personal check - This method of payment is accepted provided the information on the check corresponds with the issuer's Driver's License or California Identification. The check must originate from a California bank and must have a California address. Please make the check payable to the Orange County Superior Court. Maximum amount accepted per checking account should not exceed $7,500.

Traveler's check - If paying with a traveler's check, please make check payable to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Traveler's check will only be accepted if signed in the presence of a cashier at the cashier's office when posting bail.

Money order - If paying with a money order, please make money order payable to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Money order should be the exact amount as set bail.

Bail bond - If the person posting bail does not have the full amount, hiring a bail bondsman is recommended. Information on bail bondsman is available on the internet or the yellow pages. Before hiring a bail bondsman, make sure that they are licensed bail bond agent. Ask to see their license and identification before hiring them. Ask for itemized receipts of all charges, and copies of all signed contracts and agreements for your own records.

How to get inmate information at the James A. Musick Facility in Santa Ana?

Inmate information inquiry at the James A. Musick Jail may be accessed by phone if you call (714) 647-4666 or you may also access their website at Orange County Sherriff’s Department. To access inmate information, you must have the inmate's first and last name (middle name if applicable) and their date of birth.

How to contact an inmate at the James A. Musick Facility?

Inmates are NOT allowed to receive phone calls at the James A. Musick Facility. However, they are allowed to make one collect call to anyone so that an account may be set for them where they may purchase a calling card from the commissary. These calling cards come in increments of $25 and $50 only.

Rules and Regulations for sending mail at the James A. Musick Jail

Inmates are allowed to receive mail provided they follow the regulations listed below:

Acceptable mail items:

  • Money Orders


  • Photos should not be larger than (8x10) in size


  • All reading materials must be received from or sent directly by the publishing company or an accepted distributor (i.e. Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, costco.com, walmart.com, etc.). Each inmate is only allowed to have a maximum of 5 books at any given time.

Unacceptable mail items:

  • All items that cannot go through inspection without being damaged for example, multi-layered cards, pictures, and/or laminated items, and others alike


  • All items which contains foil or metal of any type, glass, wood, hard plastic, rubber, and/or all other illegal substances


  • Maps, travel brochures, wall calendars, and wall poster


  • Credit cards or personal checkbooks


  • Any food item


  • Any article of clothing, hygiene item or other personal property


  • Personal checks/Payroll checks


  • Padded envelopes


  • Pictures or any items with nudity or with sexually suggestive undertones - All items that is available for purchase through the commissary. For example, writing paper, envelopes, stamps, and blank cards.   • Hard cover books or used paperback books

Schedule of visiting hours at the James A. Musick Jail in Santa Ana, CA

All visitors entering the James Musick Jail will be subjected to a standard search procedure for security reasons. Before entering the visiting area, all visitors will pass through a metal detecting screening device as part of the security procedure. If you are found in possession of any illegal items such as contraband, deadly weapons, or any kind of object that may be used to injure another person will be subject to arrest on the spot.

If you refuse to undergo this procedure, you will be denied entry to the facility.

Visiting hours are from 8:00AM - 5:30PM. The last sign-up is taken at 4:30 PM. Friday through Sunday only. No visitations are allowed from Monday through Thursday.

These visiting hours apply to civilian friends and family members. Newport Beach criminal defense lawyers have a much broader schedule in terms of when they may visit client inmates.

Inmate Visiting Polices at the James Musick Jail

  1. All visitors are required to show proof of identification upon request. The following are accepted forms of identifications:


    • A California driver's license


    • A California identification card


    • A U.S. passport


    • An Alien Registration card

  2. Inmates are only allowed 30 minutes each visit and 1 visit per day.


  3. A maximum of 2 adults and 1 child under the age of 5 may visit at a time.


  4. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian for the entire visit. Otherwise, minors will only be allowed visitation if they are a direct blood relative of the inmate and with the approval of the Watch Commander.


  5. No food, drinks, candy, gum, cell phones, cigarettes, matches, lighters, pepper spray, weapons or anything deemed inappropriate by the Watch Commander will be allowed in the visiting area.


  6. All visitors who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be allowed and are subject to arrest on the spot.


  7. Clothing that is derogatory, offensive, revealing, or deemed inappropriate by the Watch Commander or his representative will not be allowed in the visiting area.


  8. All visitors whose conduct appear to be offensive or may seem potentially to disrupt the orderly conduct of the facility will be denied visitation privilege.

How to put money "on the books" for inmates at the James A Musick Jail?

Putting money "on the books" is a procedure that conveniently offers family members or friends of inmates to deposit money into their account. Once money is deposited into the inmates' account, they can purchase items available at the commissary for their convenience while incarcerated at the facility. The following two different methods of payment are accepted for this service:

  • U.S. currency - Cash may be deposited into an inmate's account 24 hours a day 7 days a week at the Cashier's office. The amount on the inmates' account should not exceed the $500 limit at any given time.


  • Money order- (Preferably United Stated Postal Money Order) Depositing money on the inmate's account using a money order can be one only through mail. When mailing a money order, make sure that they are addressed to the inmate, with their booking number and addressed properly as shown below:

Procedure on "Return of Property" at the James Musick Jail in Santa Ana, CA

All properties in the possession of the inmate at the time of arrest may be released to a family member or a friend once the booking process is concluded. The inmates have the option to release their property to a designated recipient once they fill out a release form. The release form should indicate name of the receiving party and enumerate all items being released such cash, credit cards, identification, and others alike, provided they are not required as evidence for their case.

Upon claiming of these items, the recipient must bring proof of identification for verification purposes. Coordinating with the inmate to perform initial steps of completing the property release procedure is recommended to avoid any delay and confusion at the time of arrival to the facility. Release of property can be done during regular visiting hours.


iThe facility opened its doors for service back in 1963 with only 200 male minimum-security inmates. It now has progressed to its current capacity of 1,250 inmates that include female inmates as well. Generally, the inmates housed at this facility are considered to be low security risk.
